Living systems that reflect your expression and posture in the world

Homeowners called on Andre to create a rustic, woodland landscape for their craftsmen home situated on a ¾ acre lot. The family wanted their backyard to be an extension of their home, providing plenty of outdoor living, including a covered patio, full kitchen, fireplace, pool, spa and a space for kiddos and dogs to play.

Background

We never shy away from a good challenge - And one of the biggest here was a large slope that covered most of the backyard, limiting the useable space considerably.

Strategic Plan

Construct a retaining wall at the mid point of the slope that could be backfilled, creating a useable space above and below; an enlarged upper area above would provide a nice lawn and landscape space and a terraced spot below would be a cozy hang out spot with a fire pit. Tie all the areas together with unified mason work.

Results

Andre craned and stacked extra-large boulders, down lit them with copper lighting and sent trailing plant material cascading down onto the lower terrace. We carried this rustic look into the pool, kitchen and patio areas using flat and stackable stone from the Montana backwoods. Well, we think it turned out darn awesome. We don’t mind saying we’re pretty good at integrating human use into delicate ecosystems and composing outdoor spaces that work for our clients and the nature around it—living systems that reflects your expression and posture in the world.
